History
Opened in 1970, La Amistad, which means friendship in Spanish, began as a halfway house for individuals with schizophrenia. The program occupied a quaint, yellow frame house in downtown Winter Park, Florida. Over a decade, it grew in size and evolved into a JCAHO accredited residential treatment facility for adults and adolescents. Throughout the 80's, La Amistad continued to grow and meet the needs of many families and their loved ones. The Foundation sold its programs in 1988 so that it could focus solely on the business of long term care of individuals with chronic mental illness. Subsequently, La Amistad opened Lakewood Center a few miles away in Fern Park.
